27 December 2025 - Feast of Saint John

1 John 1:1-4; John 20:2-8

Homily

Saint John invites us to joy in his first letter, the beginning of which we read as the first reading.

If we wanted to do some advanced exegesis, we could ask ourselves whether the author of this letter, or of the Apocalypse, or even of the Gospel of John, is really the apostle John, the beloved disciple who rested on Jesus' breast at the Last Supper and who faithfully stood with Mary at the foot of the cross. In reality, this does not matter, because what all these writings transmit to us is the faith of the Churches of Asia evangelized by the apostle John. Whether the texts in their final form were written by him or by his disciples is of little importance. They convey his message.

Chers frères et sœurs,

Nous avons célébré hier la naissance de Jésus, fils de Dieu.

Nous savons que Dieu s’est incarné et qu’Il est venu en ce monde pour notre salut.

Et, bien sûr, déjà nous savons que s’est à travers Sa mort et Sa résurrection qu’Il nous rachètera et nous procurera le salut.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Yesterday we celebrated the birth of Jesus, the Son of God.

We know that God became incarnate and came into this world for our salvation.

And, of course, we already know that it is through His death and resurrection that He will redeem us and bring us salvation.

Jésus de Nazareth est un migrant, fils de migrant.

L’un des titres qu’on lui donnait dans la littérature chrétienne des premiers siècles est précisément celui d’Étranger. Il est l’Étranger par excellence. Il est même étranger chez lui, car, comme le dit le Prologue de l’Évangile de Jean, Il est venu chez les siens et les siens ne l’ont pas reconnu.
