4 January 2026 - Epiphany of the Lord
Is 60:1-6; Eph 3:2-3a.5-6; Mt 2:1-12
Homily
Matthew's Gospel is extremely sober about the birth of Jesus. In its first chapter, it begins by tracing the family tree of Joseph and therefore also of Mary, since they obviously belonged to the same tribe and the same extended family. Then comes the account of the appearance of the angel Gabriel to Joseph, telling him not to hesitate to take Mary as his wife. Then, in the very next chapter, the second, Jesus is ‘discovered’ by the Magi coming from the East, who offer Him royal gifts before returning home. The Gospel says nothing else about these people, and popular piety has continued to embroider and add details about them over the centuries.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
Num 6:22-27; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21
Homily
In the Gospel we have just read, when the shepherds arrive in Bethlehem, they discover ‘Mary and Joseph with the newborn child lying in the manger’. Mary is mentioned first, in her dignity as Mother. This is why today we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Over the centuries, Christians have attributed many titles to Mary, with varying degrees of sobriety and depth. The title Mother of God, given to her since the Council of Ephesus in the fourth century, is one of the oldest. However, in the Gospels, she is simply called the ‘Mother of Jesus’, and even, in today's Gospel, the mother of a little child who does not yet have a name, since it is only eight days later that he is given the name Jesus.

31 December 2025 - 7th day in the Octave of Christmas
Homily
We have reached the last day of the Octave of Christmas.
The name of this feast of Christmas in our Latin liturgical books is ‘Nativitas Domini’, which translates as ‘birth of the Lord’. However, what we are celebrating is not the 2025th anniversary of the birth of Jesus. What we are celebrating is something more important. It is the very fact that God became man.
