Homily
In his Gospel, Saint Luke establishes a rigorous parallel between John the Baptist and Jesus. He says of both Elizabeth and Mary: "When the time came for her to give birth, she bore a son". In the case of John, it was the neighbors who came to rejoice with the mother and child; in the case of Jesus, it was first the shepherds and then the Magi. Zechariah, like Joseph, has a somewhat understated role. With John, as with Jesus, we wonder ‘ what this child will be like ’. Both had a long preparation - John in the desert, Jesus in Nazareth - before a fairly short public life.

Homily
‘ In those days Mary set out quickly...’. These words immediately link Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth to the scene of her encounter with the Angel Gabriel, which ended with Mary's words: ‘ Let it be done to me according to your word ’. Between the two scenes, we might place the lapidary phrase from the Prologue to John's Gospel: ‘ And the Word became flesh ’.

« En ces jours-là Marie se mit en route rapidement... » Ces mots relient immédiatement la visite que fait Marie à sa cousine Élizabeth à la scène de sa rencontre avec l’Ange Gabriel, qui se terminait par les mots de Marie : « Qu’il me soit fait selon ta parole ». Entre les deux pourrait se situer la phrase lapidaire du Prologue de l’Évangile de Jean : « Et le Verbe s’est fait chair ».

In the first two chapters of his Gospel, Luke presents all the major themes of this Gospel, and already introduces all the important characters, starting with Jesus and John the Baptist, whom he brings together here, already in their mother's womb.

Dans les deux premiers chapitres de son Évangile, Luc présente tous les grands thèmes de cet Évangile, et met déjà en présence tous les personnages importants, à commencer par Jésus et Jean-Baptiste, qu’il fait se rencontrer ici, déjà dans le sein de leur mère.
