Isaiah 7:1–9; Matthew 11:20–24

The readings for this Eucharist speak to us of weakness and power – of human weakness and the power of God. In the first reading, taken from one of the early chapters of the Book of Isaiah, we are presented with a description of a highly complex political and military situation, with coalitions on both sides locked in conflict. In these circumstances, the young King Ahaz is filled with fear. His heart, like that of the whole people, trembles ‘as the trees of the forest tremble in the wind’. Ahaz considers asking Assyria for help, thereby jeopardizing his kingdom’s independence. It is then that Isaiah is sent to him to tell him that God will be their support, but on one condition: faith. ‘If you do not believe, you will not survive.’

HOMILY
The Gospel we have just read (which forms a whole with the one we shall read tomorrow) contains some points of connection with the Magnificat of the Virgin Mary, which are very interesting and extremely revealing.

13 juillet 2026 – Lundi de la 15ème semaine – année paire
Is 1, 10-17; Mt 10, 34--11, 1
H O M É L I E

13 July 2026 – Monday of the 15th week – even-numbered year
Isaiah 1:10–17; Matthew 10:34–11:1
H O M E L Y
This Gospel reading is somewhat puzzling – as the Gospel often is. The final part, concerning welcoming others, and in particular welcoming Christ’s messenger, is reassuring and easy to understand. The central part of the text, however, which states, ‘Whoever loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me’, is more difficult to understand. It is as though there were a competition between the two kinds of love. Yet this does not fit with the image of God that Jesus usually presents to us.

Farming or gardening can be a good school of patience, trust and abandonment. After you have tilled the ground, sowed the seed and watered it, you just have to wait in patience. For awhile there is no way of knowing whether it will grow or not. Then you don't know how tall it will grow. You can work on the conditions of growth; you have no way of influencing the growth process itself.
With that in mind let us now return to today's Gospel.
